We hypothesize that assumptions people make about students who attend learning alternatives (assumptions like students who go to learning alternatives are ‘bad kids’ who are ‘stupid’ and ‘need to be hand-held’) are impacting decisions-made about our schools and about who gets to attend them.

What do YOU think? Are we right? Wrong?

I should say...about the last paragraph below, "feel" cast aside.
I certainly do not want to state that students are cast aside!!

Also, I don't normally compare humans to dogs!! I leave that to Skinner!

We just got a new puppy. She is absolutely adorable! Of course!
I keep hearing that saying, "There are no bad dogs, just bad owners"

I have to ask what is a "bad kid" anyway. I had a conversation with someone who attended an ALC during high school for a year. I asked her if she felt like people thought she was a "bad kid" and she was the first person I have encountered that has gone to an ALC that has said, "I WAS a bad kid"

She said she was kicked out of high school, so ya, she was bad.

This kind of goes against my thinking about children/students .

In my opinion there are no "bad kids" just bad environments or lack of student ownership. So maybe.... "there are no bad kids just bad owners." "Owners" being everyone but the students.

Maybe kids go "bad" because they have no ownership in the process of becoming educated.

This is what I notice in the summary. Learning options give ownership and the process of seeking the right option empowers students to "know thyself"

The "Drama" discussion suggests that students need this personal empowerment to overcome bullying and to have the courage to use their voices against injustice.

What really gets me going about this entire process here on SSO is that students that might otherwise be cast aside are recognizing their value in a society that needs them
